Why off/center?
The headlines of the day breed outrage, protest and despair. Too many pieces don’t deserve to be read: the content is obvious from the headlines. We are tired of sound bites, dystopian rhetoric and insufferable, self-defeating blamesmanship.
Informed, intelligent and in-depth, off/center is publishing a wide range of diverse voices with fresh ideas worthy of your time. off/center will have great writing that offering historical context as well as informed updates. Instead of one and done articles our publication will followup each story as new events unfold. off/center will reclaim the idea that populism is more than shallow right-leaning slogans and will seek to answer how we have allowed such hollow political movements to assume agency at our expense. We will keep a close eye on how the media landscape has degenerated from the wisdom of Edward R. Murrow to the meaningless posturing of Sean Hannity.
In creating off/center, we want to publish new thinking, new ideas and, above all, new solutions acknowledging what is deeply wrong in our society and with our systems. By addressing specific topics from fresh angles and pinpointing what doesn’t work we will confront continuation bias in every issue.
We’re calling it off/center because we believe that what’s needed is a fresh challenge to failed ideology. We will publish new voices to build a new coherent set of ideas and stories that inspire, engage and empower all of us. In our pages our authors will focus on what we can do to take power back from self serving bureaucracies promoting failed ideologies.
We believe that new ideas can lead to changes from the center out. In the process we want to challenge obsolete orthodoxies and move forward in the best traditions of liberal thought.
